Divide Peak

Click for Santa Barbara, California Forecast

Divide peak is a part of the Santa Barbara Ranger District Off-Highway Vehicle Routes which also includes Upper Oso (below). Both these areas are free to the public and open year round.
Directions from Santa Barbara:
  • Take San Marcos Pass (154) and turn right on East Camino Cielo. Follow E. Camino Cielo for about 10 miles and you will come to a fork in the road. Turn Left (to the Right is Gibraltar Rd.) There's a road sign to confirm you're on the right track.
  • Go about 6.5 more miles until the pavement ends near Romero Saddle.
  • Continue 1.5 miles down a bumpy dirt road to the Divide Peak Trail at the next fork in the road. Parking is on the left and is indicated by a small sign with a motorcycle and an arrow. The trail is to the right and begins after the "Road Closed" sign.
Parking Lot
Turn left here to enter the parking lot.
Ride your bike to the right to reach the trail head.
Fork in road
The fork in the road.
Gate
Trail head. Just ride around the gate.

I'm sorry that the pictures I took suck.
Hopefully, they'll be enough to get you there.
  • Take the trail about 2 miles to an open area. You'll be able to see the Ocean and two small water towers ahead. The trail to the track is to the right (almost back-tracking)

Fork on trail
The fork in the trail.
Turn right to get onto the trail to the MX track.

Too far
Oops, you went 30 feet too far. Turn around.

  • The track has some tables, doubles, elevation changes and lots of turns. The soil is very hard pack and rocky, lightly covered with a layer of desert sand to reduce traction even more - It's awesome!
  • There's no facilities what-so-ever and you're a long way from help if you need it (break down, injury, etc.) so, you may want to bear that in mind while you're riding / packing.

Upper Oso

I've read that there's two riding areas up that are part of the Santa Barbara Ranger District Off-Highway Vehicle Routes but, I've never tried them. Rumor has it that these areas include fire roads that wander through the back woods.

See also Divide Peak and Zaca Station for alternative off road riding in the Santa Barbara area. For a little bit of Road Racing history in SB you can also see this article.
