F'ugly Trailer Notes

Okay, Speedshop is hooking me up with an enclosed trailer. I wanted one because:

  1. Convenience. There's nothing worse than driving for hours and hours back from the track after an exhausting weekend and then having to unload everything when I get home. And, since, I'll keep everything in the trailer I won't have to load up either.
  2. Storage. I'll get all that motorcycle junk out of the house and into the trailer where it'll stay (see above). Plus, my pile of track stuff just keeps getting bigger as time goes on.
  3. Camping. It'll be able to sleep in the back! This'll protect me from bad weather and save me the hassle of setting up a tent. I'm also planning on sticking a TV/PS2 in there to fill the long lonely hours when the track's closed and I'm all alone in the pits as one of the few campers.
  4. Pit. The trailer will become an integral part of my pit space. I'll tie my canopy to it, keep all my gear in it, and it serves as an excellant billboard to advertise for my sponsors.
  5. Security. I usually leave for the track straight from work so, my gear is just laying in the trailer all day long and unattended. I do feel that the possibilty for theft is pretty low but, depending on what was missing, could ruin my weekend. This'll also protect my gear when I'm traveling.

It looks like the one I'm getting may be 8x10, has a ramp door and takes a 2" receiver ball. The ramp door is way cool (goodbye loading ramp) and the size should leave me plenty of room to pack all sorts of crazy things. Supposedly, it has some cabinets mounted from the cieling on the forward end and a couple of wheel chocks.

I'd like to add:

  • Checkered Flooring. Bascially, it'll look cool and make for a more pleasant floor than, say, plywood, for when I'm sleeping in it. Home Depot sells black/white vinyl tiles for about 60 cents each.
  • Wheel Lock/Boot. We're talking about parking the trailer on the street in front of Speedshop as advertising and to help people find the shop as it's impossible to see from the street and I want to make it as difficult to steal as possible. cabelas.com seems to have the best deal.
  • Deep Cycle Battery. This'll run the internal lights and assorted camping toys that I plan to have when coupled with an inverter. I'm thinking that I'll install a solar charger on the roof to help keep the battery going at the track.
  • Shelves/Cabinets. So, everything will have a secure place to go. Duh. I might just bolt in some Gorilla Racks and call it good enough for now
  • Wheel Chocks. It's supposed to have a couple but I think that I'd much rather use my flush mount ones. I'd also like to stick in some flush mount tie downs. pitpal.com has some decent ones.
  • Sink. I'd love to get a sink in there somewhere 'cause some tracks don't have running water, if you can believe that, and I'd like to occasionally wash stuff (hands, dishes, etc). pitpal.com and escapeoutdoors.com have some interesting options.

So, what do I wanna keep in it?

  • Tool Box/Spares Tote
  • Chemicals Tote
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Camping Stuff (Lantern, stove, etc)
  • Canopy, chairs, cot, etc.
  • Leathers, gear, etc (and spares)
  • Books (service manuals, etc)

Security: I'd hate to have it stolen. At the moment I just run a chain through the wheels and around the axle when it's parked. At least it won't roll unless they cut through the chain or the lock. If I end up having a littl emoney to burn then something like this might be worth checking out.
